Reflecting on Assessment: Towards an Authentic Identity as a Law Lecturer in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Craig Smith

University of Salford

The intersection of assessment, identity, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is impacting both legal education and the legal profession. We explore an assessment at Level 6, worth 50% of the module mark which is a traditional 2000-word essay and look at how this can be enhanced through generative AI opportunities to foster and challenge the identity of what it is to be a law student, an aspiring legal practitioner, and a law lecturer.

Generative AI tools such as Chat GPT can help students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the legal profession and this can be evidenced through critical reflection. As educators, we help students reflect on societal issues and now must develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be an authentic practitioner in the age of AI.

This presentation will explore an example Assessment delivered to Law students and will include feedback from law students on their use of Generative AI in an assessment for their undergraduate degree.
