Bridging the Gap to Leadership: Fostering Inclusive Spaces for Black, Asian, Mixed Heritage, and Other Minority Ethnic Students to Thrive in Higher Education and Practice Learning

Mary Makinde and Helen Carr

Canterbury Christ Church University

Practice learning environments are a cornerstone of professional development for students in health, medicine, and related disciplines. These settings allow learners to integrate theoretical knowledge from the classroom into real-world practice, shaping their professional identity and competence. While many students experience these environments positively, Black, Asian, Mixed Heritage, and Other Minoritised Ethnic students often encounter unique challenges, including discrimination and a diminished sense of belonging. These experiences can hinder their confidence, progression, and leadership aspirations.

This workshop presentation will explore how inclusive practice learning environments can be cultivated to ensure equity and belonging for all students. We will spotlight the Bridging the Gap to Leadership Programme which champions courage, compassion, and allyship as foundational principles for creating spaces where diversity is embraced and students thrive. Through interactive discussions and collaborative activities, participants will:

  • Examine barriers faced by ethnically minoritised students in practice learning environments.

  • Explore strategies for embedding inclusivity, allyship, and cultural competence into professional practice.

  • Share insights and co-create actionable ideas for shaping future practice learning environments that foster leadership and resilience.

Together, we will envision a future where practice learning environments are not only spaces for skill development but also platforms for empowerment and representation, ensuring that we are stronger together.
