From Passive to Active: Transforming Stand-Alone Lectures for Diverse Learners
Dr Charlotte Maughan Jones
Lecturer of Biomedical Engineering
University of East London
Traditional lectures often rely on passive learning, but what happens when we flip the script? This session explores how a single stand-alone lecture was redesigned to actively engage learners with complex content. Using strategies such as hands-on problem-solving, real-world scenarios, and collaborative dialogue, the approach transforms abstract concepts into meaningful, practice-oriented learning experiences. While the example comes from teaching biological sciences to engineering students, the principles - contextualization, interaction, and inclusivity - are adaptable across disciplines. Join us to discover practical ideas for making any lecture more active, engaging, and relevant.
