JiSC National Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Tertiary Education

Sue Attewell co-leads the artificial intelligence activity. Their focus is on supporting members to responsibly adopt AI. They provide a wide range of thought leadership, practical advice, guidance, and training alongside piloting relevant AI products. 

 

Before joining Jisc, Sue led skills development initiatives as head of skills at the West of England LEP in collaboration with employers. Her previous work at Jisc has included leading their edtech and apprenticeship activity.

Empowering Educators and Clinicians: The Future of Personalised Learning in Teaching and Medicine  

​

Dr Magdalena Niestrata is a Corneal Fellow at East Suffolk and North Essex Hospital Trust and an Honorary Lecturer at UCL (University College London). Holding multiple advanced degrees (BSc (Hons), PGDip, MBChB (Hons), MSc (Dist), PhD (Dist)) and fellowships (FEBO, FICO, FRCOphth), she combines clinical excellence with a strong focus on systems-based improvements in ophthalmic care.

A fluent speaker of five languages, Dr Niestrata is actively engaged with the Digital Health Special Interest Group at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), where her work includes developing innovative AI solutions—such as a corneal research chatbot—to enhance diagnostic and treatment pathways. She has published widely, including a global review of publicly available anterior segment image datasets, and continues to champion the integration of artificial intelligence into holistic patient care.

Passionate about medical education, she founded a national ophthalmic examination skills course for junior doctors and frequently lectures on cutting-edge developments in corneal and refractive surgery. With international research collaborations and a commitment to advancing digital health, Dr Niestrata remains dedicated to bridging new technologies and compassionate clinical practice.

This keynote examines the transformative impact of generative AI on UK education and healthcare, with a special focus on advances in ophthalmology and the critical role of data management. By harnessing cutting-edge AI, educators can craft personalised learning experiences that meet individual student needs, while clinicians benefit from bespoke training programmes that enhance clinical skills and patient outcomes. We will discuss real-world examples from the UK, address the ethical challenges of AI integration, and emphasise the necessity of robust data management and high-quality resources to support innovation.

The Venue

UEL's Learning and Teaching Symposium will take place at the University Square Stratford campus, located at 1 Salway Road, London E15 1NF. The campus is easily accessible by public transport and is a short walk from Stratford Station.
